On the 12th, Dong-gu, Daejeon announced that it has been finally selected as a target site for the 'Neighborhood Commercial District Development Center' project, hosted by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups.
The 'Neighborhood Commercial District Development Center' is a project where local government, merchants, residents, and other community members promote tourism-oriented business models proposed by commercial district planners, discovering solutions to local issues and strategies for commercial district development.
The project site covers the area around Jungang-dong, which includes the Korean Medicine Street and Printing Street. It will create tourism branding content utilizing the trend of old shops (Nopo) to provide an opportunity to rediscover Dong-gu, a modern cultural special zone.
Additionally, a resident-centered local specialization program will be developed to revitalize Daejeon Station's specialized food tourism, linking the commercial district with representative Dong-gu festivals such as the 'Daejeon Dong-gu Dongrak Festival' and the 'Printing UP Art Festival' to promote regional development.
The district plans to establish a commercial district association, select Renaissance projects, and build a Youth Merchant Academy through this project, laying the foundation for mid- to long-term commercial district revitalization over five years.
Park Hee-jo, head of Dong-gu Office, said, "The Neighborhood Commercial District Development Center will be an opportunity for local community members to come together to solve problems in the commercial district and establish a tourism-specialized original downtown shopping street."
