Seongnam City in Gyeonggi Province has sent advance notice letters to 122 high-amount and habitual local tax delinquents who owe more than 10 million won.
The targets are 87 individuals and 35 corporations who have not paid local taxes exceeding 10 million won for over one year since the delinquency date of January 1 this year.
The total delinquent amount is 6.2 billion won, including 4.5 billion won from individuals and 1.7 billion won from corporations.
Seongnam City plans to provide an opportunity for explanation through the advance notice letters until September 30 and encourage voluntary payment of the delinquent taxes.
Delinquents and delinquent corporations who receive the notice will be excluded from the public disclosure list if they meet any of the following conditions: ▲payment of 50% or more of the delinquent amount ▲incomplete procedures for filing objections to local or national taxes ▲collection deferral due to approval of rehabilitation plans ▲faithful installment payments according to the payment schedule of the rehabilitation plan.
Seongnam City will finalize the list of those subject to public disclosure after the second review by the Gyeonggi Province Local Tax Deliberation Committee in October, and plans to disclose it on the Gyeonggi Province and Seongnam City websites as well as on WETAX on November 20.
The disclosed information will include the delinquent person's name, business name (corporate name), age, occupation, address, type of delinquent tax, payment deadline, and details of the delinquency. In the case of corporations, the corporate representative will also be disclosed.
A Seongnam City official stated, "To ensure that diligent taxpayers do not feel relatively deprived due to malicious delinquents, we will implement strong delinquency measures against high-amount and habitual delinquents, including public disclosure, travel bans, provision of credit information, administrative sanctions, property seizure, home searches, and public auctions."
