The Incheon Health and Environment Research Institute announced on the 12th that it will strengthen ozone monitoring by implementing an ozone alert system until October 15th in preparation for periods of high ozone concentration.
Ozone is a representative air pollutant during the summer season, formed as a secondary pollutant through photochemical reactions involving volatile organic compounds and nitrogen oxides in the atmosphere as temperatures rise. It causes strong irritation and damage to sensory organs such as the respiratory system, lungs, and eyes, and can especially induce coughing and nausea in children and the elderly.
The ozone alert system is conducted by dividing the area into four zones: Western, Southeastern, Ganghwa, and Yeongjong-Yeongheung. When high concentration situations are expected, forecasts are provided by zone with four levels (Good, Moderate, Bad, Very Bad).
Ozone forecast results can be checked anytime on the Health and Environment Research Institute’s environmental information disclosure system website. By subscribing to the ozone forecast notification service on the website, users can receive ozone information for up to two selected areas of interest. Additionally, text alert services for warnings issued during high ozone concentration events can be applied for on the Incheon city website.
Kwon Moon-joo, Director of the Incheon Health and Environment Research Institute, urged, "Please refer to real-time forecast information and refrain from outdoor activities on days with high ozone concentrations."
