‘Haepalanggil’ is a 750 km walking trail consisting of a total of 50 courses that connect the beaches, forest paths, and village roads along the east coast, from Oryukdo Sunrise Park in Busan to the Unification Observatory in Goseong, Gangwon Province.
Haepalanggil is a compound word combining the symbol of the East Sea, the ‘rising sun,’ the blue color of the sea, ‘parang,’ and the particle ‘rang,’ meaning ‘together with.’ It means ‘a path where you walk together with the sound of waves while looking at the rising sun and the blue sea.’
Course 4 of Haepalanggil crosses the boundary between Busan and Ulsan and is a course that walks through forest paths and coastal roads. Starting from Gijang-gun in Busan, this course is 19.6 km long and takes about 7 hours and 30 minutes.
The course begins at Imrang Beach. This beachside area, which has a fortress wall built to defend against enemies and offers a wide view of the East Sea, is famous for its beautiful moonrise. On the path from Imrang Beach to Wolnaeri, there are various restaurants and cafes where you can replenish your energy before fully starting the course.
After passing Wolnae Port, the course heads inland. You will pass through quaint small villages and walk along winding forest paths. From about one-third of the way through the course, peaceful rural villages and natural forest paths repeat.
After exiting the forest path at the boundary between Busan and Ulsan and heading toward the seaside, you enter Ulsan. Walking along the path, you will reach Ganjeolgot, where the sun rises first on the Korean Peninsula. The sun rises here 5 minutes earlier than at Jeongdongjin, a famous sunrise spot. The Ganjeolgot lighthouse stands tall facing the sea and is white in color. In front of the lighthouse is a pine forest, which is not dense but has a winding shape that feels cozy.
After passing Ganjeolgot, you arrive at Jinha Beach, the end of Course 4. Here, the tidal difference is large, so you can walk to Myeongseondo in the front sea during low tide. The fine sand and the green gomsol pine forest behind the white sandy beach harmonize beautifully. The wide sandy beach and clean water make it always crowded with photographers and people who want to enjoy marine sports.
