Exemption of Children's Tuition Fees, Grade Manipulation, and Subsidy Embezzlement... Principal of Jinju Private School Arrested for Corruption

A former private school principal who used his position to exempt his child's tuition fees, forced manipulation of exam scores, and embezzled subsidies has been handed over to the prosecution.

The Criminal Mobile Unit of the Gyeongnam Provincial Police Agency announced on the 11th that they have arrested and sent former principal A of a private school foundation in Jinju, Gyeongnam, on charges of embezzlement, breach of trust, and obstruction of business.

They also added that three relatives of A, including B, and six school teachers, including C, who were involved in or aided the crimes, have been booked and sent without detention.

According to the police, A, who was the founder of the school corporation and served as principal, is accused of exempting about 20 million won in tuition fees for his child, a student at the school, from 2021 until last year.

He is also accused of embezzling educational subsidies by falsifying after-school tuition fees amounting to 100 million won and diverting 80 million won in labor costs by pretending to hire relatives as daily workers.

It was also revealed that when his child's exam scores appeared low, he forced teachers to mark incorrect answers as correct.

A was detained on the grounds of a risk of evidence destruction, and the results of this investigation will also be reported to the Gyeongnam Office of Education.

Previously, A was tried for sexually assaulting a female staff member by abuse of power in 2021 and was sentenced to 1 year and 6 months in prison in the first trial in May last year.

He was dismissed in July of the same year but was still found to have influenced school affairs.
