As the exit poll results from the three major terrestrial broadcasters for the 22nd general election were released, the reactions of the Democratic Party of Korea and the People Power Party sharply diverged. While the opposition bloc is expected to secure 200 seats, the People Power Party faces uncertainty even in reaching the 100-seat threshold needed to block constitutional amendments.
The three terrestrial broadcasters announced their exit polls immediately after the polls closed on the 10th. The expected number of seats for the ruling People Power Party and its proportional party, People Power Future, were predicted as 87?105 seats (KBS), 85?99 seats (MBC), and 85?100 seats (SBS).
The combined seats for the Democratic Party and its proportional party, the Democratic Alliance, were projected at 178?196 seats (KBS), 184?197 seats (MBC), and 183?197 seats (SBS).
Accordingly, the expected number of seats for the Innovation Party was commonly predicted by the three broadcasters to be 12?14 seats, which, when combined with the Democratic Alliance's seats, is expected to approach 200 seats.
If the exit polls are accurate, the Democratic Party will be able to secure a majority of the seats on its own.
Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party, commented on the exit poll results, saying, "I will humbly watch the people's choice until the very end." At the party's vote counting situation room set up in the National Assembly Members' Office Building, Lee left 30 minutes after the exit poll broadcast began without answering reporters' questions about whether he expected the Democratic Party to win a landslide victory of 197 seats.
On the other hand, a heavy silence prevailed at the People Power Party. Han Dong-hoon, emergency committee chairman, stated, "The People Power Party has strived to follow the will of the people," adding, "The exit polls are disappointing. We will watch the people's choice and the vote counting results." He left the situation room about 30 minutes later.
