First Publication of the History of the Independence Movement in Mokpo Area Draws Attention

The Department of Historical Contents at National Mokpo University (President Song Ha-cheol) announced on the 10th that it has published the book "History of Mokpo Anti-Japanese Independence Movement" in collaboration with the Mokpo Cultural Center (Director Kim Jeong-gi).

The Department of Historical Contents at National Mokpo University and the Mokpo Cultural Center signed a memorandum of understanding in 2020 to mutually cooperate in local history research and the discovery of historical contents, and have jointly conducted related academic events and published research results.

The newly published "History of Mokpo Anti-Japanese Independence Movement" is also a result of such collaborative projects. It was completed by revising and supplementing the content presented at the academic conference held on November 27 last year (Re-examining the History of Mokpo Independence Movement), marking the first time that the history of the independence movement in the Mokpo region has been published as a book.

Mokpo is often perceived as an "exploitation port" during the Japanese colonial period. However, Mokpo was also a place where various anti-Japanese national movements were carried out during that time. The "History of Mokpo Anti-Japanese Independence Movement" contains a total of nine papers that shed new light on the lesser-known anti-Japanese independence movements in the Mokpo area.

The detailed topics include the post-opening port dock labor movement in Mokpo, the April 8, 1919 Manse Movement, the independence movement at Jeongmyeong Girls' School in 1921, youth association movements, labor movements, the Singanhoe and national movements, activities of women's organizations and the Geunwoohoe, the 1929 student anti-Japanese movement at the commercial school, and socialist organization activities in the 1930s.

The authors include Professor Choi Seong-hwan from the Department of Historical Contents at National Mokpo University, as well as historians who graduated from the Department of History at National Mokpo University: Lecturer Tak Hyun-jin, Research Fellow Lee Seong-woon of the Korea Island Promotion Agency, History Teacher Park O-seong of Moksang High School, and Curator Ahn So-yeon of Yecheon Museum.

The "History of Mokpo Anti-Japanese Independence Movement" is significant in that it comprehensively analyzes the overall flow of various independence movements that took place in Mokpo from the time of the port opening through the Japanese colonial period, including detailed lists of leading figures and their characteristics.

Since its inception as the Department of History in 1981, the Department of Historical Contents at National Mokpo University has produced numerous historians and curators, leading efforts to establish accurate historical records and discover hidden local historical contents. Moving forward, it plans to continue collaborative research and discovery activities of various historical content resources with local cultural organizations, including the Mokpo Cultural Center.
