TSMC "Building 2nd Japan Factory in Kumamoto Prefecture, Kyushu"

Taiwan's TSMC, the world's No. 1 foundry (semiconductor contract manufacturing) company, has announced its intention to build a second plant in Kikuyomachi, Kumamoto Prefecture, Kyushu, following its first plant in Japan, according to local media reports on the 7th.

According to Japanese local media and Yonhap News, Wei Zhejia, CEO of TSMC, met with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, who visited Kumamoto Prefecture the day before to inspect TSMC's first plant in Japan, and conveyed the intention to build the second plant also in Kikuyomachi. Prime Minister Kishida welcomed TSMC's entry into Kumamoto Prefecture, stating that "it will have a significant ripple effect throughout Japan."


TSMC opened its first plant in Kikuyomachi in February and plans to start operations of the second plant in 2027.


The Japanese government has decided to support TSMC's first plant with up to 476 billion yen (approximately 4.2473 trillion won) and plans to invest up to 732 billion yen (approximately 6.5316 trillion won) in the second plant as well.
