A man in his 30s who approached his ex-girlfriend, who had listed clothes he had gifted her on a secondhand trading platform, pretending to be a buyer, then assaulted and confined her, was sentenced to a suspended prison term.
On the 6th, the Criminal Division 1 of the Namyangju Branch of Uijeongbu District Court (Chief Judge An Bok-yeol) announced that Mr. A (35), who was indicted on charges of special confinement causing injury, was sentenced to one year in prison with a two-year suspension. The court also ordered probation during the suspension period. Mr. A was tried for attacking his ex-girlfriend Ms. B (29), who came to sell secondhand clothes, at around 10:30 a.m. on December 24 last year in a parking lot of a building in Guri-si, Gyeonggi Province, knocking her unconscious, confining her in a rental car, and threatening her with a weapon.
Mr. A and Ms. B had dated for about half a year from April to October last year. Mr. A became angry when Ms. B posted a padded jacket he had gifted her on the secondhand trading platform, and pretending to be a buyer under a false identity, sent her messages to arrange a meeting for the transaction, disguising his true intent to commit the crime. He bound Ms. B and locked her in the vehicle, and when she woke up and resisted, he strangled her and threatened her with a weapon. However, Mr. A released Ms. B about 20 minutes later after she persuaded him.
The court pointed out, "The defendant approached the victim by pretending to be a secondhand goods trader, ambushed and knocked her unconscious, and threatened her with a weapon, showing a serious nature of the crime." Regarding the sentencing, the court explained, "However, considering that the defendant showed remorse, released the victim in a safe place, the victim’s injuries were minor, the parties reached an agreement, and the victim does not wish for punishment."
