New York City Fire Department Urges Citizens to "Stay Indoors"

On the morning of the 5th (local time), a magnitude 4.0 aftershock followed near the epicenter after a magnitude 4.8 earthquake occurred in New Jersey, USA.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), at around 5:59 PM that day, a magnitude 4.0 aftershock occurred near Gladstone, New Jersey. The preliminary depth of the epicenter was 9.4 km.

The aftershock location is about 13 km northeast of the main shock (magnitude 4.8) epicenter.

The New York Times (NYT) reported, citing New York City officials, that no significant additional damage was reported due to the aftershock.

The New York City Fire Department informed the public of the aftershock on X (formerly Twitter) and urged citizens to stay indoors.

The main shock earlier occurred at around 10:23 AM near Whitehouse Station in Hunterdon County, New Jersey.

Due to the earthquake that day, shaking was felt not only in Manhattan, New York, about 65 km east of the epicenter, but also in Boston, more than 350 km to the northeast.
