Gangseo-gu, Seoul (Mayor Jin Gyo-hoon) conducted the "Our Neighborhood Charming Garden Cultivation" program with local children on the 5th in celebration of Arbor Day.
The district enabled children to experience nature by touching the soil and planting flowers themselves through gardening activities.
The experience took place near Exit 1 of Magok Station in the green space (745-2 Magok-dong). About 20 children from Magok 8 Open Forest Daycare participated in planting more than 20 types of spring flowers and trees, including hydrangeas and yarrow.
The location where the program was held is also where a memory box (time capsule) was buried in 2017 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the opening of Gangseo-gu Office.
The district plans to cultivate this space into a charming garden with colorful changes throughout the four seasons.
They intend to create three types of nature-friendly urban gardens: "Everyday Gardens" where local residents can feel nature within the city without going far, "Urban Gardens" utilizing roadside green spaces, and "Healing Gardens" with unique characteristics in local parks and trails.
Mayor Jin Gyo-hoon said, "We will prepare programs where all local residents, from children to adults, can experience gardening," adding, "Furthermore, we will strive to create an eco-friendly city where flowers and trees accompany residents wherever they go."
