The Rising Sun Flag installed in the Uyuni Salt Flats of Bolivia, a world-renowned tourist destination, was removed following protests by Koreans.
On the 5th, Professor Seo Kyung-deok of Sungshin Women's University stated, "Recently, I have received many reports from Koreans around the world about removing the 'Rising Sun Flag,' which symbolizes Japanese militarism and imperialism."
He said, "A Korean in his 50s reported, 'During a trip to South America, I removed the Rising Sun Flag hanging in the Uyuni Salt Flats of Bolivia,' and shared related news." He added, "There is a place in front of the salt hotel in the salt flats where travelers from various countries hang their national flags. Upon seeing the Rising Sun Flag hanging next to the Taegeukgi, he sent a photo showing that he and his group removed it."
There was also a case of protest regarding the Rising Sun Flag design on beer packaging. Professor Seo said, "Last week, a Korean living in Vancouver, Canada, noticed the Rising Sun Flag design on the cover of a recently released beer by a famous Vancouver brewery and sent a protest message." It was confirmed that this beer contained Japanese sake. The co-founder of the brewery apologized, saying, "We were not aware of the history of the Rising Sun Flag." The company gifted the beer with a new design, changed two weeks later, to the Korean who sent the protest message.
