Goheung Kiwi 'Pollen Bank' Operation

Use of High Germination Rate Pollen, Production of High-Quality Kiwi

Goheung-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Gong Young-min) announced that it will operate a 'Kiwi Pollen Bank' until June to ensure stable fruiting for kiwi-producing farms and to produce high-quality fruit trees.

Kiwi requires artificial pollination because the flowering periods of female and male flowers differ. Farmers freeze pollen collected the previous year and use it for artificial pollination. At this time, a high pollen germination rate leads to successful fertilization, resulting in good fruiting, improved fruit quality, and higher sugar content, thereby enhancing marketability.

Accordingly, the Agricultural Technology Center's Pollen Bank is equipped with 13 types of equipment, including a pollen preparation room, a pollen breaker, and a pollen sorter. Since March, it has been providing a free service to test the germination rate of pollen stored both at farms and the pollen bank in accordance with the kiwi artificial pollination season.

In addition to self-produced pollen, the center also offers a long-term storage service for leftover pollen after artificial pollination to be used for artificial pollination in the following year in preparation for weather disasters, helping farmers reduce management costs. Farmers can receive various services by contacting and visiting the Agricultural Technology Center in advance.

An official from the Agricultural Technology Center said, "The first step to premium kiwi starts with pollination," and added, "We will actively promote the use of high-vitality, high-quality pollen to produce quality kiwi."
