Geumcheon-gu (Mayor Yu Seong-hoon) announced that it will promote a carbon-neutral public office building to lead a culture of practicing carbon reduction in daily life.
The district is implementing policies to reduce greenhouse gas and pollutant emissions to achieve ‘2050 Carbon Neutrality’ and is actively promoting green living campaigns.
‘2050 Carbon Neutrality’ means reducing the amount of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide emitted by individuals, companies, and organizations by 2050, while increasing the amount removed or absorbed, making the net emissions zero.
On the 28th and 29th of last month, the district held a ‘Carbon Neutrality Practice Campaign’ in the first-floor lobby of the district office to reduce employees’ use of disposable cups and improve awareness of carbon neutrality.
Coffee was provided free of charge to about 300 employees who brought their own cups, and over 350 employees pledged to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by one ton per person. Employees who participated in the pledge were given cup storage bags to encourage continued use of personal cups and to promote carbon neutrality. In February, cup automatic washers were installed on each floor to activate the use of personal cups.
In April, a ‘Carbon Neutrality Practice Guide’ will be produced and distributed to departments and neighborhoods to promote carbon-neutral lifestyles among all employees.
The ‘Carbon Neutrality Practice Guide’ introduces reduction methods that can be actively practiced within the office building in offices, meetings, and events.
▲ Office: installation of computer power-saving programs (Green Touch), use of reusable cups (tumblers), turning off lights during lunch ▲ Meetings: maintaining appropriate heating and cooling temperatures, refraining from using disposable products, promoting paperless meetings ▲ Events: use of high-efficiency products, refraining from producing paper promotional materials, and other 18 practice rules across these three areas are presented.
Additionally, each department will designate a ‘Carbon Zero Keeper’ to continuously monitor the implementation of carbon neutrality and manage greenhouse gas reduction performance to increase employees’ carbon neutrality practice rate.
Furthermore, starting this year, ‘paperless meetings’ using portable computers instead of paper materials are being held at major meetings involving executives. Climate change response experiential education was also conducted for new employees to raise interest and understanding of carbon neutrality.
Yu Seong-hoon, Mayor of Geumcheon-gu, said, “Practicing carbon neutrality starts with small actions such as reducing disposable plastics. By practicing carbon neutrality first in public institutions, we will strive to take the lead in creating a sustainable carbon-neutral city.”
