Gangbuk-gu, Seoul (Mayor Lee Soon-hee) successfully completed last month the "Land and Forest Register Hangul Database Advancement Project," which supplements and improves the existing old land and forest register Hangul database, becoming the first in the nation to do so.

Last year, Gangbuk-gu completed a project to convert the entire old land and forest register, created during the Japanese colonial period and still used as a representative basic data for land administration, into Hangul for the first time in Seoul.

However, some parts of the land and forest registers were found to be damaged, worn, or unidentifiable due to Japanese-style Chinese characters, prompting the district to improve the quality of the database recorded and stored in the system.

In particular, the district analyzed the types of errors in the database and reviewed other official land-related registers preserved at the National Archives and the local court registry offices (such as land and forest investigation reports, closed registration certificates, etc.), then supplemented the computerized characters through an expert verification process.

As a result, the old land and forest registers have become much easier to read, and the use of various civil service applications has become more convenient. A district official stated, "Through this project, the accuracy of computerized real estate information has improved, increasing its utility as basic data for ancestral land searches and land-related disputes, as well as cadastral civil complaints."

Lee Soon-hee, Mayor of Gangbuk-gu, said, "The modernization of historical land data is expected to have a positive impact on the local community," adding, "In the future, the horizontal expansion of this project could serve as a model case for other local governments pursuing similar projects."
