The death toll from the magnitude 7 or greater earthquake that occurred near Hualien in eastern Taiwan on the 3rd has risen to 9. Rescue operations are being carried out mainly around collapsed buildings, and the number of casualties continues to increase.
According to the Taiwan Central Disaster Response Center, as of 4:30 PM on the same day, the death toll from the earthquake was counted at 9. There were 821 injured, and 127 people were confirmed to be trapped due to the earthquake.
This is the first time in 25 years that a magnitude 7 or greater earthquake has occurred in Taiwan. The earthquake struck the eastern Taiwanese city of Hualien at 7:58 AM that day. The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported the magnitude as 7.4, while Taiwanese authorities announced it as 7.2.
