Sacheon City in Gyeongnam recently announced on the 3rd that it has conducted the "2024 Spring Fishing Boat Safety Special Inspection" in response to the increase in both major and minor fishing boat accidents and the rise in spring fishing boat users.
The city formed an inspection team in cooperation with the Gyeongsangnam-do Fisheries Policy Division, Korea Maritime Transportation Safety Authority, Samcheonpo Fishing Boat Safety Operation Bureau, and Sacheon Coast Guard, and plans to carry out special inspections on about 70 fishing boats in the jurisdiction until June 2.
Furthermore, the plan is to complete inspections of all 210 fishing boats in the jurisdiction by the end of the year.
On the day of the joint inspection, the team checked the presence and condition of safety equipment on fishing boats, the constant wearing of life jackets, and simultaneously conducted inspections on management regulations such as completion of specialized fishing education and compliance with safety rules. Additionally, resource management education on prohibited sizes and closed seasons was also conducted.
In particular, Cho Hyun-jun, Director of the Marine and Fisheries Bureau of Gyeongsangnam-do, personally visited the inspection site to urge fishermen to operate safely, and also visited the Samcheonpo Fishing Boat Safety Operation Bureau to check the response system for fishing boat accidents.
As a result of the inspection, minor violations were corrected immediately on site, and issues requiring system improvements will be reviewed and actively proposed to Gyeongnam Province and the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.
A city official stated, "This inspection is conducted to alleviate concerns about fishing boat safety and to protect the safety of fishermen," and added, "We ask for the interest and cooperation of all fishermen."
