A magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck Taiwan, and the world's largest foundry company TSMC announced that it has evacuated some factory employees. The extent of the damage is currently under investigation, but power supply within the factory area is reportedly operating normally.
On the 3rd, Taiwan's local media United Daily News reported that some employees of TSMC and UMC factories evacuated due to the earthquake, and the damage status is still being assessed. The Hsinchu Science Park (Zhuke) near Taipei, where the factories are located, stated, "Currently, there are no abnormalities in the jurisdictional areas such as water supply, electricity, sewage treatment plants, and laboratories within the factories."
Not only employees of TSMC's advanced packaging factory but also those of display manufacturers Innolux and Epistar, which are tenants in the park, have evacuated. Some machinery has stopped operating with warning alarms, but no abnormalities have been reported.
According to the China Earthquake Networks Center, at 7:58 a.m. on the same day, a magnitude 7.3 earthquake occurred off the coast of Hualien County, Taiwan. The focal depth was 20 km, and the epicenter was about 7 km from Hualien, a city with a population of 350,000 in eastern Taiwan. Several aftershocks have followed, making it difficult to accurately assess the extent of the damage.
