Maintenance of aging sewer pipes is increasing in preparation for heavy summer rains.
Gwanak-gu, Jungnang-gu, and Seodaemun-gu have started repairing aging sewer pipes to prevent damage caused by heavy summer rains.
Gwanak-gu has begun repairing sewer pipes that are over 30 years old to ensure the safety of its residents. Last year, the district conducted its own investigation and, after review by Seoul City, selected a total of 8.4 km of deteriorated and defective sewer pipes for initial maintenance. This year, with a budget of 13.1 billion KRW, the district has selected 8.0 km of sewer pipes in 12 neighborhoods including Nakseongdae-dong and will begin full-scale repairs starting this month.
First, the district will improve 6.7 km of aging or defective sewer pipes in areas such as Gwanak-ro 6-gil and Sillim-ro 21-gil. Additionally, 1.3 km of sewer pipes in areas where excavation is impossible due to underground installations, such as Gwanak-ro 30-gil and around Bongcheon Station, will be carefully repaired using trenchless sewer pipe repair methods.
Along with this, the district plans to actively repair and reinforce aging manholes and rainwater inlets that require urgent maintenance to enhance water flow capacity and protect residents safely from flooding damage and road subsidence. District Mayor Park Jun-hee said, "Repairing aging and defective sewer pipes is a project that must be carried out for the safety of residents, so we ask for a little understanding from residents for any inconvenience during the construction period." He added, "We will continue to do our best to make ‘Gwanak, a city safe for residents’ through systematic and proactive sewer management."
Jungnang-gu began full-scale maintenance work on aging sewer pipes on the 25th of last month to prevent flood damage during the summer. The target for maintenance is 140 meters of aging sewer pipes around Mangu-ro 63-gil, with the goal of completing the work before the rainy season. The section under construction has been in place for over 30 years, and there have been continuous complaints about poor drainage and sewer odors due to aging. Accordingly, the district plans to fully repair the sewer pipes to resolve residents’ complaints and inconveniences while preparing thoroughly for the rainy season. The district is also expanding rainwater inlets. It plans to enlarge 130 rainwater inlets installed at crosswalks, bus stops, and subway entrances where there is heavy pedestrian traffic. Additionally, 20 new rainwater inlets will be installed to facilitate smoother drainage during heavy rains. Jungnang-gu Mayor Ryu Gyeong-gi said, "We will quickly repair sewer pipes, expand rainwater inlets, and establish thorough preparedness for the upcoming rainy season." He added, "We will continue to take proactive measures on matters directly related to residents’ safety to realize a safe Jungnang."
Seodaemun-gu has proactively started repairing aging sewer pipes in the Namgajwa 1-dong area to prevent flooding damage, road subsidence, and river pollution. After completing the detailed design service in April last year, the district began construction in October on a total length of 3.5 km, aiming for completion in the second half of next year. The district is also upgrading a 450mm diameter, 640m long sewer pipe in the Bukgajwa 2-dong Bulgwangcheon-gil area to prevent flood damage and ground subsidence caused by heavy rains. From this month until mid-December, the district will carry out improvement work on aging sewer pipes in the ‘Bulgwangcheon-gil 286’ area of Bukgajwa 2-dong to prevent flood damage and ground subsidence caused by heavy rains.
