Following the recent commotion where an ostrich escaped from an ecological experience center and ran across roads in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province, this time a calf was captured after sprinting on the Gyeongbu Expressway.
On the 1st, Yonhap News reported that around 11:40 a.m., multiple reports were received by the authorities about a "calf running on the road" on the Gyeongbu Expressway heading toward Busan in Anseong, Gyeonggi Province. It was confirmed that the calf ran against traffic on the Busan-bound road, weaving between lanes and traveling approximately 9 km upstream. Police and fire authorities who responded temporarily blocked the lane where the calf was located and used ropes to capture the calf around 12:30 p.m., about 50 minutes after the reports.
When the calf appeared on the expressway, drivers who saw it hurriedly slowed down, causing traffic congestion in some sections. Fortunately, no additional traffic accidents occurred as a result. The calf was also reported to have no significant injuries.
According to police investigation, the calf had escaped from a farm near Anseong IC and entered the Gyeongbu Expressway via the entrance ramp near Anseong IC. The authorities safely handed over the captured calf to the farm owner.
There have been other cases where animals running between vehicles on the road startled citizens. On the 26th of last month, an ostrich suddenly appeared and ran along the road for a while in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province. This ostrich, named "Tadori," escaped from a nearby ecological experience center and ran between vehicles on the road for about an hour before being caught and returned to the ecological experience center. Tadori was brought to the center in 2020 as a chick less than a year old and had lived there since. It is known that Tadori had been living alone for about a month after the female ostrich "Tasuni," who was housed in the same enclosure, recently passed away.
Additionally, in March of last year, a calf ran on the Jungang Expressway connecting Jecheon and Danyang in Chungbuk for about 20 minutes before being captured by police and fire authorities and returned to its owner. At that time, the calf reportedly entered the expressway through the Hi-Pass entrance at Namjecheon Service Area.
