West Sea Coast Guard Agency Conducts Free Inspection Service for Water Leisure Equipment

Proactive Administration to Prevent Drift Accidents Due to Maintenance Failures and Secondary Major Accidents

The West Sea Regional Coast Guard Agency (Chief Kim Inchang) announced on the 1st that it will provide free inspection services for personal powered water leisure devices at major entry and exit ports for powered water leisure devices in the jurisdiction.

Personal powered water leisure devices are rarely operated during the winter season and are mostly stored on land. When the weather warms up in spring, sudden operation often leads to frequent breakdown accidents due to neglected inspections and poor maintenance.

Among the 142 water leisure accidents reported to the West Sea Coast Guard Agency last year, about 83% (117 cases) were drifting accidents caused by simple breakdowns. The causes of accidents were 59% poor maintenance, 14% careless operation, and 8% fuel depletion, with more than 70% of accidents attributed to a lack of safety awareness.

Accordingly, the West Sea Coast Guard Agency plans to conduct proactive accident prevention activities by providing safety inspection services for personal water leisure devices at least twice a year during the peak season (April to October), when fishing and leisure activities increase, along with promotional campaigns to raise safety awareness among participants.

The inspection service is organized by coast guard stations nationwide and involves safety inspections conducted by experts in various fields such as the Korea Marine Safety Authority (KOMSA), repair companies, and related organizations and devices.

Owners of powered water leisure devices who wish to use the service can make a reservation by phone at the nearest coast guard station and then visit the designated location.
