According to the report, OpenAI will open an office in Tokyo later this month. Headquartered in San Francisco, USA, OpenAI established offices in London, UK, and Dublin, Ireland last year. This is the first time in Asia. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, visited Japan in April last year and met with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to discuss plans for setting up the Japan office. The newspaper explained that the discussions from about a year ago are now materializing.

OpenAI plans to provide customer support and independent corporate services from the Tokyo office. It will also recruit talent locally in Japan. Additionally, OpenAI will participate in discussions on AI regulations with the Japanese government to minimize side effects such as misinformation caused by the spread of generative AI.

The newspaper conveyed the significance, stating, "In addition to providing independent corporate services in Japan, OpenAI will join the process of creating regulations for the proper use of generative AI," and that "its relationship with the Japanese business community will deepen."
