Apple's CEO Tim Cook announced plans to launch the mixed reality (MR) headset Vision Pro in China within this year. This move is seen as a strategic play amid slowing iPhone sales in the Chinese market this year.

On the 25th (local time), according to US economic media CNBC and others, Cook, who is visiting China, responded "Yes" to the question "Will Vision Pro be released in China this year?" in a video posted by China's state-run media CCTV on the social networking service Weibo.

Vision Pro is an MR headset released by Apple in February. It attracted global attention as Apple's first new product in nine years since launching the Apple Watch, a smartwatch, in 2015. Sales have started in North America, but it has not yet been released in other regions.

More than 200,000 units were sold initially, exceeding market expectations. However, returns have reportedly followed due to the high price of $3,500 and some user inconveniences.

Vision Pro is expected to compete with headsets made by local companies such as Pico, owned by ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok.

CEO Cook reiterated Apple's commitment to the Chinese market. He said, "I am very confident about China. I love China, I love being here, and I love the people and culture," adding, "Every time I come here, it reminds me that anything is possible here."
