Busan City will hold "Production Design: Scene Architects Build On-Screen Worlds in Busan," which heated up Seoul last summer, at the Busan Cinema Experience Museum from the 26th of this month to September 22.
"Production Design: Scene Architects Build On-Screen Worlds" is a special exhibition hosted by the Korean Film Archive that introduces the work processes of three leading Korean film art directors: Ryu Seong-hee, Jo Hwa-seong, and Han Areum.
This exhibition offers an opportunity to directly experience the project designs of art directors who meticulously realize the director's hidden intentions beyond the film's backgrounds and props. It will be a great chance to see how Korean cinema responds to audiences' expectations for the film's aesthetic achievements.
A special space unique to the Busan exhibition has also been prepared. The house of Seorae from the film "Decision to Leave," production designed by art director Ryu Seong-hee, is recreated as a photo zone at the Busan Cinema Experience Museum, allowing visitors to take photos as the film's main characters, Haejun and Seorae.
The three-channel video room, where film scenes can be viewed from multiple angles, features walls mapped with representative works of the art directors, promising visitors a more vivid experience of the film scenes.
Additionally, events based on films involving the three art directors will be held during the exhibition period.
The first event, inspired by Ryu Seong-hee’s "Decision to Leave," is titled "Looking for Seorae (tentative)." Visitors who take a photo at the "Seorae’s House" set up at the exhibition entrance and upload it to their Instagram will be entered into a draw to win one of ten copies of the "Decision to Leave" screenplay.
In May and September, events related to Han Areum’s "Kingmaker" and Jo Hwa-seong’s "Hansan: Rising Dragon" are planned. These will engage visitors by highlighting the most interesting points of each film.
Free screenings are also prepared for visitors who have not yet seen the films. Starting with "Kingmaker" on April 27, "Decision to Leave" on June 29, and "Hansan: Rising Dragon" on September 28 will be screened at 3 p.m. in the first-floor video hall of the Busan Cinema Experience Museum.
Shim Jae-min, Director of the Culture and Sports Bureau of Busan City, said, "This special exhibition is not just about the art of a single film but offers a perspective on the entire 'production design' process, providing a great opportunity to experience another aesthetic of cinema." He added, "Our city will continue to strive to approach citizens with more diverse and innovative exhibitions."
"Production Design: Scene Architects Build On-Screen Worlds in Busan," the first special exhibition of the year at the Busan Cinema Experience Museum, is free to all visitors who come to the museum from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (closed every Monday).
