The musical concert ‘Battle of Angolpo’ reenacted the victory of the Battle of Angolpo fought off the coast of Jinhae during the Imjin War. It portrayed Admiral Yi Sun-sin’s battle, overcoming the nation’s crisis with his deep love for the people and outstanding leadership, through dynamic music and spectacular scenes.

Now in its third year, this performance combined traditional elements such as sori-saseol (narrative singing), jeongga (classical vocal music), samulnori (percussion quartet), daechwita (military band music), daego (large drum), buk (drum) performances, saenghwang (mouth organ), and piri (bamboo oboe) with modern stage technologies including media art, lighting, and cinematic sound effects, earning praise for enhancing the historical and artistic value of the ‘Battle of Angolpo.’

The performance progressed from the outbreak of the Imjin War, the Battle of Hansando, the Song of the People, the Battle of Angolpo, to the epilogue. Nam Yong-hyun, baritone of the Changwon Municipal Choir, moved the audience with his portrayal of Admiral Yi Sun-sin; soprano Baek Hyang-mi played Yi Sun-sin’s mother; baritone Yang Du-seok portrayed Won Gyun; and baritone Lee Jeong-min played Lee Eok-gi, all delivering touching performances that resonated with the citizens.

Artistic director Gong Gi-tae of the Changwon Municipal Choir served as the general director and orchestra conductor for this production, which was directed by An Ji-seon, who has solid experience in directing. Composers Lee Yeon-hee, Cheon Deuk-woo, and Lee Min-kyung also participated.

The live performances by the Changwon Symphony Orchestra, the splendid choreography and dance by the Changwon Municipal Dance Company, and a special appearance by the Navy Gugak Band added even richer visual and auditory experiences.
