Gangnam-gu (District Mayor Jo Seong-myeong) held the 9th West Sea Defense Day Commemoration Ceremony and the 14th Anniversary Memorial Service for the late Lieutenant Han Ju-ho at Sudo Jeongi Technical High School on the 22nd from 10 to 11 a.m.
‘West Sea Defense Day’ is a memorial day honoring the 55 warriors and participating soldiers who sacrificed their lives during the Second Battle of Yeonpyeong (June 29, 2002), the Cheonan ship sinking (March 26, 2010), and the Yeonpyeong Island shelling (November 23, 2010).
The district commemorated this West Sea Defense Day at Sudo Jeongi Technical High School, the alma mater of the late Lieutenant Han Ju-ho, one of the 55 West Sea defense warriors, honoring his spirit of sacrifice.
About 350 representatives from various sectors and residents participated in the event. During the pre-ceremony memorial service, attendees paid tribute by laying flowers and incense in front of Lieutenant Han Ju-ho’s statue. The commemorative event, held under the theme “We Will Not Forget You,” included memorial speeches by the family of the late Lieutenant Han Ju-ho and student representatives, speeches from various sectors, a commemorative video, and performances by the Gangnam Symphony Orchestra and Gangnam Choir.
Jo Seong-myeong, Mayor of Gangnam-gu, said, “We prepared this ceremony to forever remember the sacrifice of the late Lieutenant Han Ju-ho and the West Sea defense heroes who gave their lives for the country along with many others,” adding, “We pay our respects to the noble will and spirit of the heroes who made such a sacred sacrifice.”
