Pohang 'Changbau Fishing Village Experience Resort' Transforms into a Premium Fishing Village Hotel

In 2024, the ‘Changbau Fishing Village Experience and Recreation Village’ located in Janggi-myeon, Nam-gu, Pohang City, was selected as the target site for the fishing village experience and recreation village advancement project.

The fishing village experience and recreation village advancement project aims to foster regionally customized specialized fishing villages by improving experience facilities and accommodation facilities in fishing villages, with a total investment of 400 million KRW combining national and local funds.

Considering the recent national survey on fishing village tourism awareness, which identified ‘clean and aesthetically pleasing accommodation facilities’ as one of the key factors for ‘tourist destinations people want to revisit,’ the city plans to remodel and repair existing accommodation facilities.

Through this specialization and advancement focused on accommodation facilities, the project will develop unified amenities and interior designs to enhance the quality of lodging services, improve convenience and satisfaction for visitors, provide urban residents with spaces to enjoy rest and leisure activities, and create income-generating opportunities for local residents.

Amenity refers to convenience facilities or items provided by hotels.

Changbau Village is the only fishing village experience and recreation village in Pohang City. Since its establishment in 2012 and expansion in 2015, a total of 700 million KRW has been invested to create seven guest rooms, an education center, a restaurant, and other facilities.

Additionally, due to its advantage of allowing direct enjoyment of the clean waters of the East Coast through various programs such as transparent canoeing, lift net fishing, trap fishing, sea snail catching, and wind chime rides, it is frequently visited by elementary and middle schools for experiential activities.

Since March this year, Changbau Village has signed a consignment contract with Pohang City to operate facilities created under the ‘Sinchang 2-ri Port Fishing Village New Deal 300 Project,’ including the Living Culture Center, Haesong Picnic Area, and Marine Ecology Playground, as part of the fishing village and fishing port regeneration project.

In particular, the auto camping site is highly popular as a representative marine tourism destination in Pohang City, with reservations filling up immediately upon opening due to word of mouth about its pristine marine environment.

Pohang City expects to achieve synergy effects by linking the remodeled accommodation facilities under this advancement project with the facilities of the fishing village and fishing port regeneration project, establishing Changbau as a marine tourism-centered fishing village enterprise.

Mayor Lee Kang-deok stated, “We expect many tourists to visit Changbau Village to truly enjoy a slow fishing village life, connected with the region’s marine tourism infrastructure,” and added, “In the event of natural disasters, the facilities created under the fishing village and fishing port regeneration projects will also be used as evacuation sites for local residents. We will establish multi-purpose usage plans to transform Pohang into a safe marine tourism city.”
