Samsung Electronics' Kyung Kye-hyun: "Establishing AGI Computing Lab, Creating Completely New Semiconductor"

Samsung Electronics recently established a general-purpose artificial intelligence (AGI) computing lab and has embarked on the development of AGI-dedicated semiconductors that approach human intelligence.

Kyung Kye-hyun, President of Samsung Electronics' Device Solutions (DS) Division, wrote on LinkedIn on the 19th, "I am pleased to announce the establishment of Samsung Electronics' semiconductor AGI computing labs in the United States and Korea to pave the way for AGI."

The AGI computing lab is a research institute established by Samsung Electronics to develop AGI-dedicated semiconductors. It is led by Dr. Woo Dong-hyuk, a former developer of Google's Tensor Processing Unit (TPU). President Kyung introduced, "This lab, led by Dr. Woo Dong-hyuk, will strive to create a completely new type of semiconductor specially designed to meet the enormous processing demands of future AGI."

He stated, "First, the AGI computing lab will focus on chip development for large language models (LLM), concentrating on inference and service applications. We are revisiting chip architecture to develop chips that reduce the power required to run LLMs, and we plan to continuously release new versions of chips that support more powerful performance." He also expressed expectations that "through the establishment of the AGI computing lab, we will solve the complex system problems inherent in AGI while contributing to future generations of advanced artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) models."
