"PD-nim also must have a family. Don’t you think about what our family would think and how they would feel hurt seeing that?"
The perpetrator of the 'Busan spinning kick' incident sent a handwritten letter filled with reproach and resentment to the PD of the SBS investigative program 'Unanswered Questions' that covered the case. On the 15th, the production team revealed the letter written by Mr. Lee, a man in his 30s and the perpetrator, to PD Kim Jaehwan, who was in charge of reporting the broadcast, through their YouTube channel.
Mr. Lee is the perpetrator of the so-called 'Busan spinning kick' incident, in which he assaulted a woman in her 20s returning home in a residential area of Busanjin-gu on May 22, 2022, causing her to lose consciousness and then attempted sexual assault. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison by the Supreme Court in September last year on charges of attempted rape and murder and is currently serving his sentence. He was later indicted again for making threats to retaliate against the victim after his release and for sending threatening letters to his ex-girlfriend.
'Unanswered Questions' covered the Busan spinning kick case on April 8 last year. PD Kim, the recipient of the letter, explained, "I received a letter from Mr. Lee saying he watched the broadcast. Due to the right to reply, I even visited him in person, and there was one reply to the letter he sent before the broadcast, but he sent another letter after the broadcast."
Mr. Lee wrote, "PD Kim Jaehwan, I watched the entire broadcast on the 8th and all the previews before it. This is really too much. Oh dear~ I guess you’re happy making money off just me. Thank you for your hard work and live well forever. Because you did it with heart, I guess I looked ridiculous." PD Kim speculated that the phrase "because you did it with heart" likely meant that he claimed he spoke sincerely when PD Kim visited him in prison.
He continued, "While I understand it professionally, you shouldn’t take the words of BJ Eom Taewoong and those who make money with such talk at face value. We weren’t even together for two weeks." YouTuber Eom Taewoong had claimed in June last year that he was in the same detention center as Mr. Lee for two weeks and that Mr. Lee took psychiatric medication daily to submit as evidence of diminished mental capacity during his trial.
Mr. Lee added, "PD-nim, you must have a family too. Don’t you think about what our family would think and how they would feel hurt seeing that?"
Experts pointed out the handwriting in the handwritten letter. "At first glance, it looks like beautiful handwriting, but it is hard to read. Just by looking at the writing, you can see Mr. Lee’s selfish traits. It doesn’t feel like ‘someone should read and understand this,’ but rather that he wrote it prettily only for himself and made it hard to read, which reveals the perpetrator’s characteristics," they analyzed.
