Long-Range Fleet Air Defense Missile, Made by Our Own Hands

LIG Nex1 Signs 330.6 Billion KRW Contract for Fleet Air Defense Missile-II System Development

A new long-range air defense guided missile to be mounted on the Korean next-generation destroyer (KDDX) will be made by our own hands. Once production is completed, it can replace the US-made fleet air defense SM-2 missile currently operated by the military.

On the 15th, LIG Nex1 announced that it signed a contract worth 330.6 billion KRW with the Defense Acquisition Program Administration for the development of the Fleet Air Defense Guided Missile-II system.

The Fleet Air Defense Guided Missile-II is a new long-range air defense guided missile to be mounted on the Korean next-generation destroyer (KDDX). It is called Type II because its operational purpose and concept are similar to those of the SM-2. It serves to protect warships from threats posed by North Korean aircraft and cruise missiles. The KDDX is a "Korean mini Aegis destroyer" that domestically develops and mounts a combat system comparable to the US-made Aegis, and the guided missile to be mounted is also developed with domestic technology.

The Fleet Air Defense Guided Missile-II is being developed as an advanced weapon system equipped with precision guidance and search functions, aiming for a localization rate of over 90%. LIG Nex1, which has extensive experience in developing precision-guided weapons, will serve as the lead company for the Fleet Air Defense Guided Missile-II system development project until 2030.

Lee Dong-seok, head of the Guided Missile Business Division at the Defense Acquisition Program Administration, stated, "Through the Fleet Air Defense Guided Missile-II project, the military will secure fleet air defense missiles with enhanced capabilities to respond to North Korean air defense threats, and domestic defense companies will improve their independent research and development capabilities for precision-guided weapons."
