Research to Achieve Standalone Dryer Performance

"To overcome the structural limitation that integrated washer-dryers inevitably have lower performance than standalone dryers, we have reexamined all existing design methods from the ground up."

Lee Muhyung, Vice President and Head of the CX Team at Samsung Electronics' DA Division, made this statement during a briefing held at the Samsung Electronics press room on the 11th, explaining the drying technology of the 'Bespoke AI Combo.'

The Bespoke AI Combo is an integrated washer-dryer product. It boasts the largest drying capacity among domestic products, with a washing capacity of 25kg and a drying capacity of 15kg. It has gained popularity, surpassing 3,000 units in cumulative sales.


Samsung Electronics has been developing technology for nearly three years with the goal of solving issues such as fabric damage caused by the conventional hot air drying method in integrated washer-dryers, while achieving performance comparable to standalone dryers.


Vice President Lee emphasized, "The design space of integrated washer-dryers is inevitably reduced to about half compared to existing models. To innovate the hardware, Samsung Electronics optimized the placement of the heat pump (compressor + heat exchanger), which was previously located at the bottom of the dryer, by designing and positioning it at the top. Additionally, the automatic detergent dispenser, which was previously at the top, was relocated to the bottom. We applied core technologies from design to component arrangement."


In particular, by equipping a high-efficiency inverter heat pump and applying optimal component design, a large-capacity heat exchanger of the same size as a standard 21kg dryer was applied. This increases the contact area of circulating air, allowing laundry to dry more effectively.

Another feature is controlling the drying temperature so that it does not exceed 60 degrees Celsius, minimizing consumer concerns about fabric shrinkage. The product also enhances convenience and resolves concerns about inconvenient cleaning by applying the 'Direct Water Power Auto Clean' function, which connects directly to the water supply inside the product and cleans the heat exchanger with a strong water flow.


Concerns about energy saving have also been addressed.

For washing, the 'EcoBubble' technology enables fast and clean laundry even in cold water, and for drying, energy efficiency is maximized by applying a high-efficiency heat pump. The product has a Grade 1 energy consumption efficiency rating, with power consumption per kilogram of laundry during washing being 40% lower than the minimum standard for Grade 1 energy efficiency.


Vice President Lee stated, "Starting with the success of the Bespoke AI Combo, Samsung Electronics plans to solidify the formula 'AI Appliances = Samsung' by introducing products with enhanced AI functions such as the Bespoke Jet AI and Bespoke JetBot AI to the domestic market this year."
