Last Quarter NAND Sales Increase... Samsung and Hynix Market Share Rise

Q1 NAND Market Size Expected to Increase by 20%

Following a more than 20% increase in NAND flash market sales in the fourth quarter of last year, it is forecasted that sales will increase by another 20% in the first quarter of this year. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix's NAND market shares in the fourth quarter of last year rose together due to the surge in sales.

Market research firm TrendForce announced on the 6th that the NAND market sales in the fourth quarter of last year reached $11.49 billion, a 24.5% increase from the previous quarter.


The market share leader in the fourth quarter of last year was Samsung Electronics. Samsung recorded a 36.6% market share, up 5.2 percentage points from the previous quarter. Its sales amounted to $4.2 billion, a sharp increase of 44.8% from the previous quarter.


TrendForce explained, "Demand surged across servers, laptops, and smartphones," adding, "Bit shipments increased by 35% compared to the previous quarter, and the average selling price (ASP) rose by 12%."


SK Hynix ranked second with a 21.6% market share, up 1.4 percentage points from the previous quarter. The company recorded sales of $2.4804 billion in the fourth quarter of last year, a 33.1% increase from the previous quarter due to price rises.


From third place onward, the rankings were Western Digital (14.5%) from the U.S., Kioxia (12.6%) from Japan, and Micron (9.9%) from the U.S., respectively. Unlike Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, all three companies saw slight declines in their market shares.


Despite the first quarter traditionally being an off-season for the NAND market, sales are expected to increase by an additional 20%. TrendForce predicted, "As (customer) order volumes continue to grow, the fixed transaction price for NAND will rise by an average of 25%."
