A high school in the United States sparked controversy by holding a fundraising event called the 'Licking Peanut Butter off Toes' challenge. As the controversy grew, local education authorities also launched an investigation.
On the 4th (local time), local media such as The Oklahoman highlighted the uproar at Deer Creek High School in Oklahoma. The high school held the 'Toe Licking Challenge' as a fundraiser for a coffee shop that employs people with disabilities.
The Toe Licking Challenge involved students applying peanut butter to their toes and licking each other's toes. It appears to be a fundraising event modeled after popular 'challenges' on social media platforms like SNS. The school reported raising $152,830 (approximately 200 million KRW) through this event.
However, netizens who saw the challenge video reacted strongly, calling it 'child abuse.' In the publicly released video, students are seen lying side by side on the ground, licking each other's toes. It was also reported that no faculty members participated in the event.
The controversy spread to the political arena. U.S. Republican Senator Ted Cruz retweeted the video on X and condemned it as "child abuse." Local politicians in Oklahoma also voiced the need for stricter supervision during fundraising events.
The Oklahoma Department of Education is reportedly investigating the Deer Creek High School fundraising event. Ryan Walters, Oklahoma State Superintendent of Public Instruction, stated on his official SNS, "(The video content is) disgusting," and added, "A thorough investigation of the school event is underway."
