Major social networking services (SNS) operated by US big tech companies such as Facebook, Instagram, and Threads experienced a large-scale outage on the 5th (local time) but were restored within two hours.
According to Downdetector, which tracks outages of major applications and websites on the 5th (local time), more than 500,000 users experienced Facebook access issues. Additionally, 77,000 Instagram users were unable to access the service.
The Facebook and Instagram outages began after 10 a.m. Eastern Time and were restored about two hours later.
Andy Stone, spokesperson for Meta, Facebook's parent company, stated on X (formerly Twitter), "This morning, users experienced difficulties accessing some of our services due to a technical issue. We resolved the problem as quickly as possible and apologize for the inconvenience."
The large-scale SNS outage was reported not only in the US but also in Canada, Mexico, the UK, and other countries.
Notably, since the day was "Super Tuesday," when US presidential primary elections are held, there was speculation that the outage might have been caused by a cyberattack aimed at disrupting voting.
An official from the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) said regarding this matter, "We are aware of the issue," and added, "No malicious cyber activity related to the election has been identified."
