President Yoon Suk-yeol mentioned the independence movements carried out by the ancestors during the Japanese colonial period, including armed anti-Japanese independence movements, diplomatic independence movements, and educational and cultural independence movements, stating, "I believe that the value of all independence movements must be properly evaluated, and that their history should be correctly passed down from generation to generation."
On the same day, President Yoon said at the 105th anniversary 3.1 Movement commemoration ceremony held at the Yu Gwan-sun Memorial Hall in Jung-gu, Seoul, "Starting from the March 1st Movement, various forms of independence movements unfolded both domestically and abroad."
Regarding the fields of independence movements, President Yoon enumerated, "There were fighters who risked their lives to carry out armed independence movements. There were also pioneers who engaged in diplomatic independence movements around the world by understanding the flow of international politics," adding, "There were practitioners who took part in educational and cultural independence movements to enable us to develop our own capabilities."
He continued, "After the fall of imperialism, it was the result of all these pioneering efforts that guaranteed our independence," emphasizing, "The blood and sweat of independence activists gathered to achieve the independence of the homeland and laid the foundation of the Republic of Korea."
In particular, he stated, "No one can monopolize history, and all citizens, as well as our descendants, should take pride and honor in the proud history of the Republic of Korea," promising, "Myself and the government will devote efforts to ensure that the sacrifices and dedication of the ancestors, from independence and nation-building to the revival of the country, are properly remembered."
