President Yoon Suk-yeol said on the 1st, "At the root of the March 1st Independence Movement Declaration was liberalism, a major current in world history at the time."
On the same day, President Yoon made this remark at the 105th anniversary March 1st Movement commemoration ceremony held at the Yu Gwan-sun Memorial Hall in Jung-gu, Seoul, quoting the phrase from the March 1st Independence Declaration: "Our nation seeks to develop freely forever and to keep pace with the great current of world change shaped by humanity’s conscience."
In his commemorative speech, President Yoon explained, "105 years ago today, our ancestors declared that Korea was an independent nation and that Koreans were its masters. They grasped the Taegeukgi in their hands, embraced their belief in freedom in their hearts, and launched a nationwide nonviolent struggle."
He continued, "They believed that the blood shed by our ancestors would soak the land and sprout the seeds of freedom, allowing future generations to live happily in a country of freedom and prosperity. Moreover, the March 1st Movement was a forward-looking independence struggle rarely seen in any history."
He especially paid tribute by saying, "The March 1st Movement dreamed of a new country where freedom was enjoyed by all, regardless of age or gender, not the restoration of monarchy. And the faith and hope of our ancestors were fulfilled as they wished."
President Yoon also explained that now, more than 100 years after the March 1st Movement, Korea has become a global pivotal country enjoying freedom and prosperity, contributing to world peace and prosperity while also offering culture as a gift.
Regarding this, President Yoon said, "No hardship could stop our challenge toward freedom and prosperity. A country without capital or resources, devastated by war, built highways, nuclear power plants, and industries on its land. Even in times when it was difficult to secure meals, we looked to the future and spared no investment in science, technology, and education. I am truly proud of the great journey of our people who have overcome countless adversities and challenges," expressing his respect repeatedly.
President Yoon emphasized, "My government and I will uphold the value of freedom, the spirit of the March 1st Movement, and devote all efforts to building a happier and more prosperous Republic of Korea."
