He also shared Pohang City's hydrogen industry capabilities and future vision, proposing that Pohang City and H2KOREA strengthen continuous cooperation to realize an early low-carbon hydrogen economy society.
H2KOREA was designated as a 'Hydrogen Industry Promotion Agency' in 2021 and has 87 member companies specializing in hydrogen. It is responsible for promoting the hydrogen industry, supporting hydrogen company growth, serving as a bridge between the government and industry, and managing international cooperation and information exchange.
Mayor Lee Kang-deok stated, “The core of energy transition for carbon neutrality lies in hydrogen energy, the next-generation eco-friendly energy source. I ask for much interest and cooperation so that Pohang can become a model case of energy transition through its excellent infrastructure and differentiated hydrogen industry promotion policies.”
Pohang City is focusing on hydrogen policies with the vision of “leaping into a 2050 eco-friendly hydrogen economy hub city,” aiming to attract 70 hydrogen companies and achieve sales of 1 trillion won.
The city possesses competitive advantages distinct from other cities, with favorable infrastructure for resident companies such as parts and materials performance evaluation, a fuel cell demonstration center, and a hydrogen fuel cell certification center within the hydrogen fuel cell cluster, as well as excellent human resources from POSTECH, POSCO Holdings Future Technology Research Institute, and Pohang Technopark.
Additionally, Pohang plans to build core hydrogen city infrastructure unique to the city, including the distribution of hydrogen electric vehicles and hydrogen buses, hydrogen pipeline networks and hydrogen charging stations, and a hydrogen city information center. By utilizing hydrogen as the main energy source, the city aims to create a hydrogen city that brings fundamental changes to the urban economy and citizens' lives.
