This is because the statute of limitations for the Pohang earthquake lawsuit is set until March 20, and most law offices in the region are expected to complete submissions by the end of February to ensure no complaints are omitted within the period.

The court ruled on November 15, 2017, for the main quake and on February 11, 2018, for the aftershock, that plaintiffs recognized as residents of Pohang City at those times are entitled to compensation for mental damages.

Immediately after the first trial ruling, the city widely informed citizens of the ruling’s content and significance and guided citizens’ participation in the lawsuit through various means such as opening a guidance center, holding citizen briefings, banners, flyers, electronic billboards, phone call connection tones, and village broadcasts to protect the legal rights and interests of earthquake-affected citizens.

In particular, during the concentrated promotional week over the Seollal holiday period, the city conducted extensive promotional activities by visiting households in each eup, myeon, and dong, and explained the purpose and participation procedures of the lawsuit to members of the resident representative meetings of apartment complexes, actively requesting cooperation to ensure residents within apartment complexes could participate in the lawsuit without omission, putting all efforts into the final promotion.

Kim Nam-jin, Director of the Urban Safety and Marine Bureau of the city, said, “As most law offices in the region plan to complete lawsuit submissions by the end of February, we urge citizens who have not yet participated in the lawsuit to make sure to participate within the deadline to prevent omission.”

Pohang City will continue to operate the earthquake guidance center to ensure no inconvenience in lawsuit participation.
