Prime Minister Han Duck-soo visited the National Medical Center in Jung-gu, Seoul on the afternoon of the 19th to inspect the preparedness of the emergency medical system. Amid doctors' plans to take collective action in protest against the increase in medical school quotas, the government intends to minimize medical service gaps.


According to the Prime Minister's Office, on the same day, Prime Minister Han received a report on the emergency medical response situation from Cho Young-soo, director of the National Medical Center, and visited the Central Emergency Medical Situation Room to check the status of hotline establishment between medical institutions and the response procedures in case of emergency medical situations.


Earlier that morning, Prime Minister Han held a meeting with ministers of related departments, reaffirming the government's commitment to increasing medical school quotas. He also stated that if the medical community takes collective action, the emergency medical system of public medical institutions will be activated and telemedicine will be fully permitted.

Prime Minister Han said, "The most important thing in the current situation is to minimize the medical service gaps caused by collective action to protect the lives and health of the people," adding, "We will respond by mobilizing all government capabilities through the operation of the emergency medical system to minimize harm to the public."


Those present at the on-site inspection included Cho Young-soo, director of the National Medical Center; Cho Young-jung, deputy director of medical services; Jin Sung-chan, head of the Planning and Coordination Headquarters; Kim Sung-joong, director of the Central Emergency Medical Center; and Jeon Byung-wang, director of Health and Medical Policy at the Ministry of Health and Welfare.


Prime Minister Han emphasized, "With the reduction of medical services at private hospitals, the role of public medical institutions, including the National Medical Center, has become more important," and urged, "Please ensure that there are no issues in patient care when critically ill and emergency patients are transferred."


He continued, "The National Medical Center worked hardest on the front lines even during the COVID-19 period, and it is regrettable that it is facing difficult circumstances again," stressing, "We will do our best to stabilize the situation as soon as possible."
