Data consulting company PMAI conducted the survey on 1,174 unmarried men and women aged 20 to 59 nationwide. Among respondents, 75.8% were not currently dating. The proportion of those “dating” (24.2%) was more than three times lower.

Regarding the number of dating experiences, 36.9% answered “1?2 times,” 19% “3?4 times,” and 18.5% “5 times or more.” Those who had never dated accounted for 25.5%, with 57.3% of them in their 20s and 30s.

The most common reason for not dating was “economic reasons” at 17.2%. “No particular reason or don’t know” (15.8%) and “no suitable partner” (10%) also accounted for high proportions. “Too bothersome” and “not interested” were similar at 9.5% and 9%, respectively.

Respondents prioritized the partner’s “personality” (33.5%) as the most important factor when choosing a dating partner. “First impression, appearance” was 25.4%, “values” 13.6%, and “economic ability” 5.9%.

PMAI analyzed that “this reflects a tendency to pursue self-realization by interacting in different forms beyond traditional interpersonal relationships.”

The survey has a sampling error of ±2.9 percentage points at a 95% confidence level.
