The Democratic Party confirms 22 primary election districts... Yangcheon Gap three-way primary among Gu Jaryong, Jeong Migyeong, and Jo Sujin

The People Power Party has finalized 22 constituencies for internal primary elections to select candidates for the upcoming general election in April. Preliminary candidates who did not make the primary list have effectively been cut off (excluded from the primary).

On the afternoon of the 16th, the People Power Party’s Nomination Management Committee announced that it had decided on a total of 22 constituencies where internal primaries will be held for the 22nd general election. Among the 22 constituencies, there are 7 in Seoul (Dongdaemun-gap, Seongbuk-gap, Seongbuk-eul, Yangcheon-gap, Yangcheon-eul, Geumcheon, Gangdong-gap), 2 in Incheon (Namdong-eul, Bupyeong-gap), 4 in Gyeonggi (Uijeongbu-eul, Gwangmyeong-gap, Gwangju-eul, Yeoju-Yangpyeong), 5 in Chungbuk (Cheongju-Sangdang, Chungju, Jecheon-Danyang, Boeun-Okcheon-Yeongdong-Goesan, Jeungpyeong-Jincheon-Eumseong), 3 in Chungnam (Boryeong-Seocheon, Asan-eul, Hongseong-Yesan), and 1 in Jeju (Seogwipo). However, since the boundaries of Gangdong-gap in Seoul and Gwangmyeong-gap in Gyeonggi are likely to be adjusted, primaries will be held after the constituencies are finalized.


In Dongdaemun-gap, former lawmaker Kim Young-woo and former Presidential Office administrator Yeo Myung will compete. In Seongbuk-gap, former Seoul Housing and Communities Corporation board chairman Seo Jong-hwa and former Presidential Transition Committee National Integration Committee member Lee Jong-cheol will face off. In Seongbuk-eul, Kyung Hee University Graduate School of Business professor Lee Sang-gyu and former aide Lee Jin-soo will compete. In Yangcheon-eul, former lawmaker Oh Jeong-hoon and lawyer Ham In-kyung will contest. In Geumcheon, former Geumcheon district party committee chairman Kang Sung-man and Korea Maritime University professor Lee Byung-chul will compete. In Gangdong-gap, People Power Party spokesperson Yoon Hee-seok and lawmaker Jeon Ju-hye will face off. Yangcheon-gap is the only Seoul constituency with a three-way primary, involving People Power Party emergency committee member Koo Ja-ryong, former lawmaker Jung Mi-kyung, and lawmaker Jo Soo-jin.


In Namdong-eul, Incheon, former Incheon city spokesperson Ko Ju-ryong and former Presidential Office senior administrator Shin Jae-kyung will compete. In Bupyeong-gap, former Incheon City Council member Yoo Je-hong and Incheon District Court chief judge Jo Yong-gyun will contest.


In Uijeongbu-eul, Gyeonggi, former Uijeongbu-eul party committee chairman Lee Hyung-seop and former MBN anchor Jung Kwang-jae will compete. In Yeoju-Yangpyeong, former lawmaker Kim Seon-kyo and lawmaker Lee Tae-gyu will participate. Two constituencies in Gyeonggi will have three-way primaries. In Gwangmyeong-gap, former party committee chairmen Kwon Tae-jin and Kim Ki-nam and lawmaker Choi Seung-jae will compete. In Gwangju-eul, People Power Party Central Committee secretary-general Park Hae-kwang, former Gwangju mayor Jo Eok-dong, and former Gwangju-eul party committee chairman Hwang Myung-joo will face off.


In Cheongju-Sangdang, Chungbuk, former Daegu High Prosecutor’s Office chief prosecutor Yoon Gap-geun and National Assembly Deputy Speaker Jung Woo-taek will compete. In Chungju, former Presidential Office administrator Lee Dong-seok and lawmaker Lee Jong-bae will contest. In Jecheon-Danyang, lawmaker Eom Tae-young and former Presidential Office administrator Choi Ji-woo will compete. In Boeun-Okcheon-Yeongdong-Goesan, lawmaker Park Deok-heum and former Yeongdong county governor Park Se-bok will face off. In Jeungpyeong-Jincheon-Eumseong, former lawmaker Kyung Dae-soo and former Eumseong county governor Lee Pil-yong will compete.


In Boryeong-Seocheon, Chungnam, dermatologist Ko Myung-kwon and lawmaker Jang Dong-hyuk will compete. In Asan-eul, Asan Development Institute director Kim Gil-nyeon and former Cheonan deputy mayor Jeon Man-kwon will contest. In Hongseong-Yesan, lawmaker Hong Moon-pyo and former Presidential Office senior citizen and society secretary Kang Seung-gyu will face off. In Seogwipo, Jeju, former Jeju Police Agency chief Ko Ki-cheol and former Jeju Provincial Council member Lee Kyung-yong will compete.


Preliminary candidates who did not make the primary list are effectively considered cut off. Jang Dong-hyuk, secretary-general of the People Power Party, said, "Those who were not included as single-nomination candidates or primary candidates can be regarded as having been cut off."


Jung Young-hwan, chairman of the People Power Party’s Nomination Committee, stated, "Other constituencies subject to confirmation were excluded from today’s announcement. Once the constituency confirmation plan is approved at the plenary session, we will reconsider and decide accordingly," adding, "The remaining interview evaluations will also be conducted fairly according to principles and standards."
