U.S. President Joe Biden strongly criticized former President Donald Trump's NATO threat remarks as "stupid, shameful, dangerous, and un-American."
On the 13th (local time), President Biden made these remarks during a White House speech urging the House of Representatives to pass a security budget bill that includes support for Ukraine and Israel.
Former President Trump has recently been making critical remarks about NATO. On the 10th, he sparked controversy by saying that NATO allies should take responsibility for their own security and threatened to "encourage Russia's invasion" against countries that do not share defense costs. On the 12th, he posted on social media that U.S. support for Ukraine far exceeds that of Europe and threatened, "If NATO is not equal, America comes first."
President Biden responded, "Can you imagine a former U.S. president saying something like this?" and added, "The whole world heard those words." He emphasized, "No president in our history has ever bowed to Russia's dictator. To be clear, I never will."
Meanwhile, President Biden urged the House of Representatives to pass the Ukraine aid budget bill. Earlier, after an overnight debate, the Senate approved the budget bill worth $95.3 billion, including $60.1 billion in aid to Ukraine, with 70 votes in favor and 29 against past 5 a.m. The remaining step is passage in the House, but the bill's fate is uncertain as Republican members, who hold the majority, oppose it. Former President Trump, the Republican presidential candidate, opposes the bill's passage, and House Speaker Mike Johnson, also a Republican, maintains opposition citing the absence of provisions related to U.S. border policy.
