Hwang Sun-woo (21), the flagship of Korean swimming, became the third Korean athlete to win a gold medal at the International Swimming Federation (FINA) World Championships, following Park Tae-hwan and Kim Woo-min.
On the 14th (Korean time), Hwang Sun-woo touched the pad first with a time of 1:44.75 in the men's 200m freestyle final at the 2024 FINA World Championships held at Aspire Dome in Doha, Qatar.
Hwang Sun-woo became the third Korean athlete to win a gold medal at the FINA World Championships and the first to win gold in the 200m event. Park Tae-hwan and Kim Woo-min both won gold medals in the 400m event. Park Tae-hwan won gold in the 400m at the 2007 Melbourne and 2011 Shanghai Championships, and Kim Woo-min won gold in the 400m final just two days ago.
Hwang Sun-woo also became the first Korean athlete to win medals three consecutive times at the FINA World Championships. He placed second in the 200m at the 2022 Budapest Championships with a time of 1:44.47 and third at the 2023 Fukuoka Championships with a time of 1:44.42.
Hwang Sun-woo surged aggressively from the start in the 200m final. Having qualified second in the semifinals and assigned lane 5 in the final, Hwang recorded the fastest reaction time of 0.62 seconds among the eight swimmers. He was first to pass the 50m mark with a time of 24.24 seconds and maintained the lead at the 100m mark, passing first with a 0.22-second lead over second place. At the 150m mark, a challenge arose as Luke Hobson in lane 6 took the lead. Hwang passed the 150m mark in second place, 0.41 seconds behind Hobson. However, Hwang showed strong finishing power and reclaimed first place in the final 50m segment.
He also fended off a fierce late surge from Danas Rapsys (Lithuania) in lane 4, who had overtaken him in the semifinals, ultimately touching the pad first overall.
Hwang Sun-woo finished 0.30 seconds ahead of second-place Rapsys, who recorded 1:45.05. Hobson, who led at the 150m mark, finished third with a time of 1:45.26.
Thanks to the performances of Hwang Sun-woo and Kim Woo-min, key figures of Korea's golden generation in swimming, Korea made history by winning two gold medals at the FINA World Championships for the first time ever. Expectations for the upcoming Paris Olympics, opening in July, are also expected to rise significantly.
