The monthly legislative activity allowance for Seoul Metropolitan Council members is expected to increase by 500,000 KRW.
This follows the Gyeonggi Provincial Council's unanimous decision on the 9th by the Legislative Allowance Deliberation Committee to raise the monthly legislative activity allowance by 500,000 KRW.
On the 6th, the Seoul Metropolitan Council held a public hearing on the increase in legislative allowances, expressing support for the proposal to raise the monthly legislative activity allowance by 500,000 KRW.
Accordingly, the Seoul Metropolitan Council's Legislative Allowance Deliberation Committee will hold a final vote.
The increase in legislative activity allowance comes after the Ministry of the Interior and Safety amended the Enforcement Decree of the Local Autonomy Act at the end of last year, allowing the monthly legislative activity allowance for local council members, which had been frozen since 2003, to be increased up to 2 million KRW for provincial council members.
As a result, the total salary that council members can receive is known to be about 72 million KRW, including an annual legislative activity allowance of 24 million KRW plus a monthly fixed allowance increased by 1.7%, the previous year's civil servant salary raise rate.
This is reportedly comparable to the level of a grade 6 to 7 city council employee (including overtime pay), and is not considered excessive.
Additionally, it is expected that basic council members of city, county, and district councils will also see their monthly legislative activity allowance increase by about 400,000 KRW.
