Buckingham Palace in the United Kingdom announced on the 5th (local time) that King Charles III has been diagnosed with cancer.
The British royal family stated that King Charles III was diagnosed with cancer last week during treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia and began treatment on the same day.
The royal family did not disclose details such as the type or stage of the cancer but explained that it is not prostate cancer. It is reported that King Charles III was diagnosed with a type of cancer following diagnostic tests after undergoing surgery for benign prostatic hyperplasia at the hospital.
British broadcaster BBC reported that King Charles III traveled from his Sandringham estate to London on the same day to begin outpatient treatment. Although public activities will be temporarily suspended, the broadcast stated that he plans to continue his constitutional duties as head of state, including paperwork and private meetings.
The royal family said that King Charles III is maintaining a positive attitude toward treatment and hopes to return to public engagements as soon as possible. They also stated that the cancer diagnosis was made public to prevent unnecessary speculation and to help raise public understanding of those affected by cancer.
King Charles III informed his eldest son, Prince William, and his second son, Prince Harry, of the cancer diagnosis. Prince Harry is reportedly planning to come to the UK to see his father. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Labour Party leader Keir Starmer, among others, wished the king a speedy recovery.
