President Yoon Suk-yeol on the 5th urged, "Please make every effort to manage holiday prices and prevent safety accidents during the holiday period."
President Yoon made this request during his weekly meeting with Prime Minister Han Duck-soo in the afternoon, according to a written briefing by Kim Soo-kyung, spokesperson for the Presidential Office.
This statement is interpreted as considering the unusual situation of prices for agricultural, livestock, and marine products used during the Seollal holiday.
According to the Consumer Price Index trends for January 2024 announced by Statistics Korea on the 2nd, the consumer price index last month was 113.15, marking a 2.8% increase compared to the same month last year. After the consumer price index recorded 3.8% in October, it decreased to 3.3% in November, 3.2% in December, and 2.8% last month.
However, prices for agricultural, livestock, and marine products rose by 8.0% compared to the previous year.
President Yoon is also concerned about the series of safety accidents such as traffic accidents and winter fires. Following the fire at Seocheon Special Market in Chungnam last month, a factory fire occurred in Mungyeong, Gyeongbuk. On the same day, a fire broke out at a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) factory in the Taean agricultural and industrial complex in Chungnam.
