The photo shared by Mr. A showed the Galaxy Fold caught on the fishing line. As Mr. A explained, an ID card and cards were tucked inside the smartphone case pocket. The Galaxy Fold 5 is priced at 2,097,700 won for the 256GB model and 2,218,700 won for the 512GB model at launch. The smartphone owner, who thought the phone was lost forever, rewarded Mr. A with 50,000 won found inside the phone case, ending the story on a heartwarming note.
The post has become a sensation, reaching 600,000 views within a day. Netizens responded with comments such as "Wow, he really caught that. Amazing," "This feels a bit unreal," "He caught the most expensive thing by weight," "It's a wild Galaxy Fold," "Weighing several tens of times more than a daegumbari," "Isn't this Lee Soo-geun who dropped his phone on the show City Fisherman recently?" and "It got caught because it was a wallet-type phone case."
Another point of interest among netizens was whether the smartphone retrieved from the sea still worked properly. One netizen commented, "Manufacturers do not recommend using smartphones that have been submerged in seawater due to corrosion issues," but added, "If it wasn't submerged deeply in seawater, washing it well with fresh water and drying it thoroughly should prevent major problems."
Meanwhile, most premium smartphones released recently have an IP68 waterproof rating. Here, '6' indicates dust resistance, and '8' indicates water resistance. The '8' is the highest level of water resistance, meaning the device can withstand being submerged in water over 1 meter deep for 30 minutes. However, this rating is measured in still water. Strong water streams from sinks or showers can pose a risk of water ingress even for IP68-rated smartphones. Especially microphones and speakers, unlike fully sealed interiors, can be more easily damaged by strong water streams, so caution is necessary.
