On the 1st, major foreign media reported that the Chinese government executed the death penalty on the father, Zhang Bo, and his girlfriend, Ye Chengtian, who threw the children from a high-rise apartment to kill them. Zhang is accused of killing his 2-year-old daughter and 1-year-old son by throwing them out of the window from the 15th floor of an apartment located in Chongqing, southwestern China, in November 2020.

Chinese netizens expressed even greater anger over the motive for the killings revealed by Zhang. The cause was that Ye, his mistress, and her parents said they could not marry if he had children, which ultimately led to the killing of the children. Additionally, Ye is accused of forcing Zhang to kill the two children, leading to increasing voices condemning both of them.

Immediately after killing the two children, Zhang tried to pretend that the children had accidentally fallen while sobbing uncontrollably, but the authorities judged that Zhang had killed them based on evidence such as the children being too small to open the balcony door themselves.

Chinese netizens have expressed intense anger to the extent that they showed great interest in the execution carried out more than three years later. Netizens reacted with comments such as "I hope they receive divine punishment," "Not even qualified to be a father," "How can someone like that be a parent," and "The children are so pitiful." News of their execution has recorded hundreds of millions of views on Chinese social networking services (SNS) on the day and has become a hot topic, even trending in real-time search rankings.
