On the 31st at 3 PM, Busan City will hold the ‘Busan Diaspora New Year Gathering’ at the Lotte Hotel in Seoul, marking the beginning of its leap toward becoming a 'Global Hub City.'
The event is jointly hosted by the city government, the city council, and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
About 500 diaspora figures from the Seoul metropolitan area, active in politics, economy, education, and culture as the backbone of South Korea, will attend. From Busan, Mayor Park Hyung-joon, the chairman of the Busan Chamber of Commerce, and key city officials are expected to participate.
The catchphrase for this event is 'Busan is Beginning.' It signifies Busan’s start to leap forward as a global hub city, becoming a new axis of development that leads balanced national growth and sustainable development in South Korea.
It also echoes the phrase “Busan is Beginning,” which President Yoon Suk-yeol proclaimed during his visit to Busan last December, signaling Busan’s renewed leap as a global hub city. On that day, President Yoon promised to promote a special law for the global hub city and provide comprehensive government support.
The event, themed ‘Global Hub City Busan,’ will feature a storytelling b-boy performance, a briefing on Busan’s future vision by Mayor Park, a ‘Global Hub City Busan’ ceremony, and congratulatory performances in a lively sequence.
The opening storytelling b-boy performance will project the future image of global hub city Busan on a large screen, featuring Busan’s key projects and tourist attractions such as Gadukdo New Airport, Busan New Port, Bukhang, Busan International Finance Center (BIFC), Gwangandaegyo Bridge, and the Busan Cinema Center. The b-boy will perform in sync with the story, captivating the diaspora attendees.
During the main event, the Busan future vision briefing, Mayor Park will express his strong ambition to make Busan a global hub city surpassing Hong Kong and Singapore.
In particular, he will emphasize that to transform Busan into a world-class city attracting people, businesses, and capital, bold regulatory reforms and tax reductions with full support are necessary. As the first step, he plans to announce the enactment of the ‘Special Act for the Creation of Busan Global Hub City’ this year, establishing the institutional and legal foundation to swiftly implement these measures.
Following this, the ‘Global Hub City Busan’ ceremony will pledge to collaboratively develop essential elements for realizing the global hub city?railroads, ports, aviation, finance, new industries, education, and culture?together with the diaspora through a performance.
The congratulatory performance will be a collaboration between Busan-born singer Choi Baek-ho and young musicians from Busan. The performance will feature a remake of Choi Baek-ho’s classic songs, reinterpreted last August by the Busan Music Creation Center in collaboration with CJ ENM and Busan’s junior musicians. This will be the first stage performance of the song at this event, promising an unforgettable emotional experience for musicians and diaspora attendees alike.
The city is promoting various policies to expand the base of young cultural artists. As part of these efforts, Busan operates the ‘Busan Music Creation Center’ in partnership with the Busan IT Industry Promotion Agency, discovering talented Busan musicians and providing diverse support ranging from music content planning and production to distribution and performances.
Mayor Park stated, “With Busan’s brand value higher than ever and the government’s active support promised, now is the golden time for Busan to leap forward as a global hub city.” He added, “Since the ‘Special Act for the Creation of Busan Global Hub City’ has been proposed recently, I ask for the active support and participation of the Busan diaspora to ensure its passage through the National Assembly within the first half of the year.”
