"Reduce Dependence on NVIDIA"... Is OpenAI Going to Manufacture Semiconductors Directly?

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, is weighing whether to produce AI semiconductors directly or entrust them to partners, stirring global attention. There is keen interest in who will become the semiconductor partner of OpenAI, the superstar that sparked the generative AI wave. As part of this, on the 26th, CEO Altman visited Korea and met with Kyung Kye-hyun, CEO and Head of the Semiconductor (DS) Division at Samsung Electronics, and Chey Tae-won, Chairman of SK Group, to discuss AI semiconductor cooperation.

OpenAI is reportedly considering producing semiconductors directly. According to foreign media, discussions are underway with the U.S. Congress about where and how to establish semiconductor factories. Additionally, there are reports that OpenAI has engaged in talks with TSMC, the world's largest foundry (semiconductor contract manufacturer), and UAE AI company G42 to directly develop AI semiconductors.

OpenAI's consideration of direct semiconductor production or partner collaboration stems from the fact that AI semiconductors are essential for advancing generative AI. Currently, NVIDIA virtually dominates this market, making prices skyrocket. To reduce dependence on NVIDIA, CEO Altman has also sought investments from global investors, reportedly discussing funding with Japan's SoftBank, UAE entities, and Silicon Valley venture capitalists (VCs).

The U.S. Democratic presidential primary has been turned upside down. Deepfake audio impersonating President Joe Biden was circulated. The AI-generated deepfake voice urged voters not to participate in the primary, spreading false information. Moreover, it perfectly mimicked Biden's speech style, including phrases like "Malarkey." Consequently, state governments have launched investigations into the dissemination of false information using AI. Meanwhile, OpenAI has blocked the development of AI chatbots for Democratic presidential candidates. OpenAI had previously stated that it prohibits the creation of chatbots impersonating candidates or governments or interfering with voting using its technology, and this is the first enforcement of that policy.

Generative AI is also being applied to soccer player recruitment. IBM and Spanish professional soccer club Sevilla FC have partnered to introduce generative AI into their player scouting system. The AI recommends players based on quantitative data such as height, weight, speed, goal statistics, and playing time, as well as qualitative data from scouting reports. By inputting key characteristics or playing styles of desired players, the AI generates a list of candidates and provides summary reports. Until now, player scouting has relied heavily on subjective human judgment and manual data analysis despite the astronomical costs involved. There is growing anticipation that AI application will enhance the efficiency of player recruitment.
